In Nanopunk, the earth is eleven years into the Big Freeze that wiped out a third of the human population and most of the wildlife. The story begins at a time when society is beginning to slowly piece itself together. Part of the reconstruction is due to the significant input from Chinese engineers, technology and equipment. Another part of the reconstruction involves Private Military Corporations, the largest and most powerful of which is Lycus. With a threadbare military, the governments’ dependent on Lycus is integral to the reconstruction. But what are Private Military Corporations and why didn’t the government simply recruit more soldiers?
The answer is simple, Lycus pay its operatives several times the salary paid to soldiers enlisted in the State Military forces – And they ruthlessly pursue the remains of, and invest in, the latest technologies; regardless of the financial or human cost. All this means that security comes at a price.
In the real world, since September 11, 2001, the US government has spent over Three Trillion Dollars on Private Military Corporations
How much is that? Well a trillion is one million one millions. $1000,000,000,000 The PMC business is a very lucrative one.
